South Devon countryside near Princes Farm holiday cottage

Princes Farm is just 10 miles from Dartmoor National Park which is North of Plymouth. Dartmoor covers an area of 368 square miles, which is the largest area of open country in the South West of England. Dartmoor has a lot to offer from its beautiful scenery, Ponies, archaeological heritage and its many walking or cycle routes.

Tavistock, an ancient stannary town, has been voted the best market town in Britain and is nestled on the edge of the moors and well worth a vist.

To the East of Dartmoor you will find the beautiful Tamar valley; originally famous for market gardens and fruit growing along the banks of the Tamar. Cotehele Quay on the Cornish side of the river is a wonderful National Trust property with magical house and gardens that weave their way to the Tamar riverside.

On the Devon side, Morwellham Quay is the site of what was Europe’s largest copper mine port. Recently it has featured in the TV series ‘A Victorian Farm’ and operates as a living museum.

If you take a boat trip up the Tamar you will pass under Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s famous Royal Albert railway bridge (1859), shaped in the form of two eyes (we always think) and at the time of construction considered a major feat of engineering.

Further to the East of Plymouth is Ivybridge in the foothills of Dartmoor and a host of market towns including Ashburton and Totnes (20 miles), renowned for its Arts scene and Friday market.
